PartsMatchup is reader-supported and independent of AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts and every other store we compare. Some store links may earn us a commission at no cost to you; it never changes which part or store we recommend. How we make money · How we compare

This guide collects what AutoZone itself publishes about its free services, loaner tools, rewards, returns and warranties, checked on November 2, 2026, with a link to each official page. Services vary by store, available staff and vehicle, so call ahead if you are counting on one.

AutoZone Loan-A-Tool: how the loaner tool program works

AutoZone’s Loan-A-Tool program offers almost 100 specialty tools, such as oxygen sensor sockets, serpentine belt tools, A/C manifold gauges, pullers and fuel system kits. In the store, you leave a deposit equal to the tool’s purchase price. You can keep the tool for up to 90 days and bring it back undamaged to any AutoZone for a full refund. If you decide to keep it, the deposit simply becomes the purchase price.

You can also borrow online: order the tool like a normal purchase, keep it up to 90 days, then ship it back with the return form or drop it off at a store. That 90-day window is twice the 45 days Advance Auto Parts lists for its loaner tools.

Free services at AutoZone

  • Fix Finder check engine light report: AutoZone checks your check engine light and gives you a free report.
  • Free testing: alternator, starter, battery and more.
  • Battery solutions: checking a battery before you buy, or charging a dead one.
  • Recycling: bring used oil to the store, and get credits for used batteries.
  • Repair help: step-by-step guides on AutoZone’s site.

AutoZone’s services page did not list free battery installation when we checked; ask your local store, or see how Advance handles it in our Advance Auto Parts guide.

AutoZone Rewards: what it is worth

You earn one credit for every purchase of $20 or more, and five credits earn a $20 Reward to use on a future purchase. Rewards expire 90 days after they are issued. Because a credit counts purchases rather than dollars, the program pays the most when you split shopping into separate $20+ trips: five $20 purchases return 20%, while five $100 purchases return 4%. Our AutoZone vs Advance Auto Parts comparison shows how that stacks up against Advance Rewards’ points.

AutoZone return policy

For in-store purchases, bring the item back in its original condition and packaging, with the receipt, within 90 days of the purchase date for a refund. Defective items are handled within the warranty period, and refunds may be denied if an item was used or installed. AutoZone may ask for a government-issued photo ID. Online orders can be returned to a store with the receipt, or by mail with the return form, and fluids must be drained first.
