A car battery is one of the few parts where the two stores’ house brands line up almost tier for tier. Below are eleven matchups by group size and tier, checked on the same day. Every battery also carries a refundable $22 core charge at both stores, which you get back when you return the old battery.

How to choose between the tiers
- AGM (Duralast Platinum, DieHard Platinum AGM): required if your car came with an AGM battery or has engine start-stop. Both 48 AGMs we checked list 760 CCA, 120 minutes of reserve capacity and a 4-year free replacement warranty.
- Better tier (Gold): the default for most cars without start-stop. 3-year free replacement at both stores.
- Good and budget tiers: lower prices and shorter warranties. DieHard Silver lists 2 years and DieHard Red 1 year; AutoZone’s Duralast and Econocraft warranty terms were not shown on the listing pages we checked, so confirm in store.

Installation and free battery testing
Both stores test batteries, starters and alternators for free. Advance Auto Parts lists free battery installation and registration with purchase for most vehicles; AutoZone’s services page lists testing and charging but did not state free installation when we checked.
