Pad life varies by vehicle, pad material, axle and driver. Front and rear pads often wear at different rates, so check both axles. That is why manufacturers rely on inspections, wear indicators and, on some cars, electronic pad-life monitors.
What makes brake pads wear faster
These factors matter more than the brand on the box.
| Factor | Effect on pad life | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| City, stop-and-go driving | Many more stops per mile | Anticipate stops and coast |
| Towing, heavy loads, hills | More heat and wear | Use lower gears on long descents |
| Sticking caliper or dry slide pins | One pad wears much faster than the other | Service hardware at every pad change |
| Pad compound | Ceramic, semi-metallic and organic wear differently | Use the type suited to your driving |
| Worn or scored rotors | Rough surface eats new pads | Resurface or replace rotors as needed |

How to check your pads
- Look through the wheel at the outer pad: measure the friction material, not the metal backing.
- Nissan says its wear indicators make noise at about 2 mm left and that pads should be replaced at or before 2 mm.
- Watch the dash: some vehicles, including some Chevrolet models, have a brake pad life monitor.
- Listen for squealing from the wear indicators, and treat grinding as urgent.
When to replace them
Replace pads when the indicator squeals, a pad-life monitor says so, or an inspection measures them near the minimum. Other signs Chevrolet lists include grinding, longer stopping distances, a spongy pedal, vibration and pulling to one side.
Safety: brakes are a safety system. If you are not confident checking or replacing pads, have them inspected; a dealer or shop multipoint inspection usually includes pad measurements.

Frequently asked questions
It varies too much for one number. Chevrolet says there are no specific mileage intervals because wear depends on driving habits and conditions. Have them measured at routine service. How many miles do brake pads last?
Nissan says to replace pads at or before 2 mm of friction material; check your vehicle’s service information for its specification. What is the minimum brake pad thickness?
Usually not, and it depends on the vehicle’s brake system, so have both axles measured rather than assuming.Do front and rear brake pads wear at the same rate?
